The plot centers upon the fictional ocean liner SS Poseidon, on its final voyage from New York City to Athens before being sent to the scrapyard. On New Year's Eve, it is overturned by a tsunami wave caused by an underwater earthquake. A 21 foot 6 inch long model was built for the movie which was a exact replica of the queen Mary,and Parts of the movie were filmed aboard the RMS Queen Mary which had retired in 1967 and was in the process of being converted to a hotel permanently sited at long beach California, the queen Mary hotel opened to the public on 8th may 1971, the 21 and a half foot model created for the movie now resides at the San Pedro maritime located in San Pedro California
